Project Description

Born from a desire for greater familial closeness after the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, this project was designed for two sisters and their brother, bringing them together under one shared roof while maintaining the independence of each family unit. Working with a compact site and substantial program requirements, the design prioritizes human scale over massiveness. A split-level configuration for each apartment takes advantage of reduced heights at the parking level, allowing street-facing bedrooms to sit lower and fostering a more intimate connection with the urban surroundings. Distinct vertical zoning within each home creates a sense of individuality akin to standalone houses. Above, the split-level arrangement continues, culminating in a communal rooftop space with an amphitheater for family gatherings, complemented by shared amenities like a gym, pool table, laundry, and guest room—all discreetly integrated to maintain the building’s low, approachable profile.

The building’s western façade addresses environmental and aesthetic concerns through a custom-designed metal louver system, shielding interiors from the harsh western sun while preserving transparency and a visual connection to the street. This louvered skin establishes an industrial material palette that continues inside the apartments, where exposed concrete, metal sections, and warm wood finishes create interiors that are both raw and welcoming. Through careful massing, thoughtful detailing, and a shared vision of togetherness, the design achieves a rare balance between communal living and personal space.
