The Courtyard - H
Project Description
The Courtyard House reinterprets traditional Indian courtyard homes with a modern approach, centering its spatial experience around an open-to-sky core. Designed using a square grid derived from nine squares, the home fosters a seamless connection between its interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. A long central axis visually links the entrance gate to the courtyard, ensuring a fluid interaction between built and natural elements. The house’s elevated mass enhances cross-ventilation while providing shade, making it well-suited for Ahmedabad’s harsh climate.
Functionally, the home is divided into two sectors: the grandparents’ and guest bedrooms open to the landscape, while service areas like the kitchen and dining are placed in the southeast for optimal ventilation. A floating wooden staircase wraps around a semi-circular pooja room, leading to an upper-level bridge that visually connects to the courtyard below. Materials like Kota stone and wooden flooring complement the warm, earthy palette, while skylights and indirect lighting enhance the ambiance. The courtyard remains the heart of the house, serving as a social hub, a light-filled retreat, and a dynamic play area, encapsulating the essence of traditional living within a contemporary framework.
