Project Description

This sea-facing residence in Vagator, exemplifies sustainable innovation by pioneering the use of mass timber in India. Designed for Sahil Barua, the co-founder of an e-commerce logistics company, the home reflects his appreciation for authentic materials, inspired by his childhood at the Louis Kahn-designed IIM Ahmedabad campus. Perched on stilts and concrete retaining walls, the structure minimizes site disturbance, preserving the natural slope and vegetation. The elevated foundation protects the house from moisture, ensuring longevity while reducing the environmental impact of traditional construction.

The residence’s linear form, with a pitched roof suited for Goa’s monsoons, features eleven prefabricated glulam portal frames. Glulam, a sustainable mass timber with steel-like strength, was chosen for its low carbon footprint and efficient construction. Thoughtful engineering and value-driven design streamlined the assembly process, proving that timber can rival conventional concrete construction in both efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Inside, the open-plan layout offers a seamless connection between living and dining areas, while large glazed openings and a continuous skylight flood the interiors with natural light. A mezzanine gallery, designed to showcase the client’s diverse art collection, overlooks the double-height living space, blending architecture with personal expression. This project sets a precedent for environmentally conscious design, harmonizing materiality, function, and aesthetic appeal.
