Joglo Residence
Project Description
When we first visited the site, we were captivated by the lush forest surroundings and the family's cherished traditional Javanese house, the Joglo. Though rich in character, the Joglo could no longer meet the family's evolving needs. Rather than replacing it, the design approach was to preserve the Joglo and weave a new architectural narrative around it—introducing modern living spaces that harmonize with its historic spirit.
Drawing inspiration from the Joglo's rhythmic wooden columns, solid stone walls, and the material palette of wood, sandstone, terrazzo, and colorful cement tiles, the new additions—Pavilion, Bungalow, and Staff Quarter—were crafted to echo and enhance the existing language with a contemporary twist.
The Pavilion, attached to the Joglo, extends the indoor living area while maintaining the Joglo’s horizontal rhythm. A cantilevered terrace floats above the garden, blending openness and modernity. The Bungalow, placed at the landscape’s edge, offers private guest accommodations. Partially sunken and topped with a roof garden, it preserves unobstructed views from the Pavilion and merges seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
Inside, the Bungalow’s vibrant bathrooms reinterpret the Joglo's original materiality, with colorful cement tiles, muted terrazzo flooring, and wooden louvered windows that honor tradition while enhancing comfort and privacy.
Together, the old and new create a living environment where heritage and contemporary design coexist effortlessly.
