Project Description
Returning to Mumbai after years in the US, a young couple sought to craft a home that harmonized their global experiences with their love for vernacular Indian design. With the husband working across time zones and the wife immersed in her artistic practice, their home needed to be both functional and expressive, reflecting their distinct lifestyles. The resulting space seamlessly fuses traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics, where handmade textured tiles meet sleek Italian marble, Victorian shutters coexist with cane doors, and muted whites and grays serve as a canvas for vibrant accents. This carefully curated balance extends throughout the home, creating an inviting, dynamic atmosphere that mirrors the couple’s personalities.
A defining element of the design is the bold integration of color and materiality, with deep blue tones dominating the living and dining areas, punctuated by hints of gray, light blue, and pink. Originally a compartmentalized three-bedroom layout with a small kitchen, the home was reconfigured to enhance openness. The kitchen and service corridor were merged into the living space, transforming it into a semi-open layout tailored to the couple’s preference for fluid, social living. The expansive island kitchen—a rarity in Mumbai homes—serves as a focal point, doubling as a cooking station, bar, and gathering hub. Textural richness is introduced through a thoughtful selection of materials, including handmade cement tiles, lime-plastered walls, veneer wood, and cane, all blending to create a space that is both tactile and visually engaging. This home is a testament to the art of balance—where heritage meets modernity, and functionality meets artistic expression.
