Project Description

Located in a residential neighborhood of central Hyderabad, this project involved the sensitive renovation and expansion of two existing structures—a two-story house and a small clinic from the 1980s—set within a garden shaded by mature mango trees. Rather than demolishing, the design retained and adapted the original frame structures, minimizing construction waste and optimizing ecological and economic efficiency. The ground and first-floor layouts were refined to trim excess circulation and enhance spatial quality through enlarged openings, while a new double-height dining area and a triple-height stairwell redefined the interior experience. A compact metal-and-wood staircase replaced the older concrete stair, freeing up space for additional utilities. An elevator was integrated into the existing foyer without disrupting the structure. The second floor, a largely new addition, accommodates a children’s bedroom, a home theatre with a pantry, and an open-to-sky yoga space—all carefully screened with fluted glass and salvaged pergolas to maintain privacy without compromising natural light.

Architecturally, the intervention emphasizes the junction of old and new: exposed earth block walls on the new upper floor rest lightly above the existing white plastered lower floors, separated by a ribbon of jigsaw-patterned windows. Cantilevered balconies and terraces extend the home eastward into the garden, enhancing the connection to the outdoors. On the south façade, a louvered screen with variable angles discreetly conceals services while modulating light. The former clinic was repurposed to house staff quarters and a production space, with interventions such as a lightweight clay tile roof for parking and internal drywall partitions to preserve the original marble floors. Throughout, the design embraces a natural, clean aesthetic, blending old and new seamlessly into a calm, contemporary family home.
