House in Farm
Project Description
Tucked within the vibrant expanse of Coimbatore’s urban fabric, this residence merges the rustic charm of a farmhouse with the modern functionality of a contemporary bungalow. Designed as a multigenerational sanctuary, the home creates a delicate balance between private retreats and expansive communal spaces, seamlessly blending indoor comfort with outdoor serenity. The site planning, oriented southwest to optimize natural light and ventilation, offers serene vistas of swaying coconut palms on one side and the vibrant cityscape on the other. Separate vehicular and pedestrian entries, lush landscaping, and minimized west-facing openings ensure privacy and comfort. An external garden, shaded from the afternoon sun, anchors the layout, while large east-facing windows flood interiors with soft natural light. A skylit staircase with a soaring louvered window brings light into the home’s core, illuminating the Puja room and enhancing the spiritual ambiance.
A minimalist material palette of concrete, exposed brick, white accents, and warm wood defines the home’s aesthetic, complemented by black granite details and steel perforated gates. Thoughtful innovations such as anthropometrically designed stair railings, an open-to-sky courtyard in the son’s bedroom, and custom louvered shutters enhance functionality while maintaining visual cohesion. Sustainable practices are integrated through furniture crafted from reclaimed wood, ensuring environmental responsibility without compromising design integrity. A custom-designed screen subtly separates the entry passage from the son’s private garden, enhancing privacy while maintaining aesthetic fluidity. This home stands as a testament to sensitive, sustainable design—celebrating tradition and modernity, privacy and connection, simplicity and sophistication within Coimbatore’s evolving landscape.
